PV Sindhu bags gold medal at BWF World Championship

In a historic moment, PV Sindhu, badminton player became the first Indian to bag gold medal at BWF World Championship on August 25th, 2019.

She defeated Nozomi Okuhara from Japan in straight two games 21-7, 21-7 in 38 minutes.

In 2013, she created history by being the first Indian to win a Bronze medal at BWF World Championship. She won bronze again in 2014 and silver medal in 207 and 2018. She finally levelled the score this year by winning gold medal.

PV Sindhu was also the first Indian to win BWF World Tour in 2018 by defeating Nozomi Okuhara.

Origin of the game Badminton and BWF

  • Games with shuttlecocks originated 2000 years ago.
  • British played Badminton as a game in mid-19th century. Earlier it was called battledore and shuttlecock.
  • The word ‘Badminton’ name derives from the Duke of Beaufort’s Badminton House in Gloucestershire, South West England.
  • In India, the game originally developed among expatriate officers in British India.
  • In India, the game was also known as Poona or Poonah after the garrison town of Poona, where it was popular
  • In 1873, it was in Poona the first rules for the game were laid down.
  • Till 1887 this sport was played under the Pune rules
  • In 1890 Hart and Bagnel Wild revised the rules.
  • In 1893 the Badminton Association of England (BAE) published these rules and officially launched the sport at a house called “Dunbar” in Portsmouth
  • In 1899 the BAE started the first badminton competition, the All England Open Badminton Championships for gentlemen’s doubles, ladies’ doubles, and mixed doubles.
  • In 1900, the club added the singles competitions were added in 1900
  • In 1904 England–Ireland championship match was started
  • In 1934 International Badminton Federation was founded, what is now called the  Badminton World Federation (BWF). England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand were the founding members of BWF.
