Power crisis, is India headed for a ‘blackout’?
Coal, the primary fuel power, which fuels 70% of India’s energy consumption, is facing a severe shortage on the domestic front. India, although the second-largest producer of coal, yet on October 6, it had enough coal stocks to generate electricity for barely four days. According to experts, the reasons for the coal crisis in India are natural calamities, soaring oil and gas prices and economies opening up post covid increased the demand for power. Further coal imports fell by 40 percent due to a rise in coal prices globally.
The good news for children, Coronavirus vaccination – Covaxin was approved for emergency use in children aged 2 years and above
The subject expert committee on Covid-19 has granted emergency use approval to Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for children in the 2-18-year age group.
According to reports, Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech had completed Phase-2 and Phase-3 trials of covaxin on children below 18 years of age in September and submitted the trial data to the Drugs and Comptroller General of India at the start of this month.
At G20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautions on terror from Afghanistan
*PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday, Oct 12th, participated virtually in the G20 summit that was convened by Italy. According to a Press release issued by the Indian Government, Modi emphasized the need to enhance the joint fight against the “nexus of radicalization, terrorism and the smuggling of drugs and arms in the region.” Emphasizing the need for Afghanistan’s access to unhindered humanitarian support, Modi welcomed the European Union’s one billion euro humanitarian aid package to Afghanistan.
India adds 5 billionaires every month, still 60% of Indians are living below poverty line
The wealth of the top 10 Indians is equal to the wealth of 500 million. On the other hand, more than 60% of Indians are still living below the poverty line and one-third are living in slums. Richest 10% are controlling three-quarters of India’s wealth.
On the other hand, hunger index, India trails Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal
India had slipped to the 101st position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021 of 116 countries and is behind its neighbors Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. “People have been severely hit by Covid-19 and pandemic-related restrictions in India,” the report said. Neighboring countries like Nepal and Pakistan have fared better at feeding its citizens than India, according to the report.
Now moving on to the International news
2 Journalists battling for freedom of expression were awarded the Nobel peace prize.
Journalist Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov from Russia won the Nobel prize on Friday in an endorsement of free speech.
The two were awarded “for their courageous fight for freedom of expression” in their countries.
They bravely fought against the leaders of the Philippines and Russia to expose corruption and misrule.
US and Singapore open land borders for travelers
The US will lift restrictions at its Land borders for fully vaccinated foreign nationals in early November, ending historic curbs on non-essential travelers in place since March last year to curtail the Covid-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, Singapore announced that it will reopen its borders from October 19 to visitors from another 9 countries without the need for quarantine. It excludes India from the list.
Escalated tensions between Taiwan and China
Tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated since October 1, when China observed its National Day to mark the birth of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). China’s President Xi Jinping reiterated that Taiwan must reunify with China. Coinciding with the 72nd-anniversary celebrations, China flew over 100 fighter jets into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone, setting off an alarm around the world that it was prepping to take over the island by force.

Weather Update:
Deep depression in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal has been responsible for moderate to heavy spells in South Peninsula.
The cyclonic circulation over Arabian sea will persist for another 3 to 4 days. Thus, we expect moderate to heavy rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during next 2 to 3 days and over Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema for next 3 to 4 days.
