MC Mary Kom today created history by defeating Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota in the 48kg light flyweight final at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.
This win makes her number one boxer in the women’s World Boxing Championships. With 6 gold medals she surpassed Katie Taylor of Ireland.
She had defeated North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the semi-finals of the women’s 48 kg light flyweight category.
Mary Kom had previously won the gold medal in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 editions of the Championships. Apart from this, she had also won the silver medal on her debut in 2001.
This is the second time India is hosting the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and last time being in 2006. Mary Kom won a gold medal in 2006 and she did it again in front of the home crowd.
The AIBA World Boxing Championships and the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships are biennial amateur boxing competitions. It is organised by the International Boxing Association, a sport governing body. Alongside the Olympic boxing programme, it is the highest level of competition for the sport.
