MC Mary Kom reached final beating North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the semi-finals of the women’s 48 kg light flyweight category in the AIBA Women’s World Championships in New Delhi.
The AIBA World Boxing Championships and the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships are biennial amateur boxing competitions. It is organised by the International Boxing Association, a sport governing body. Alongside the Olympic boxing programme, it is the highest level of competition for the sport.
This is going to be a historic win to Mary Kom, as her gold medal tied with Katie Taylor of Ireland.
Mary Kom will fight Hanna Okhota of Ukraine in the final. The five time world champion had previously won the gold medal in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 editions of the Championships. Apart from this, she had also won the silver medal on her debut in 2001.
Lovlina Borgohain from India lost against Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-Chin in 69 kg welterweight semi-finals and took home bronze.
This is the second time India is hosting the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and last time being in 2006. Mary Kom won a gold medal in 2006.
