2018 Commonwealth Games kicks off at Carrara Stadium, Gold Coast, Australia

The Commonwealth Games, is a multi-sport event, which brings together 53 members states of British Empire. The British Empire comprises of territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom and its predecessor states in the late16th and 19th centuries.

This sporting event was first proposed by John Astley Cooper in 1891, when he wrote an article in The Times suggesting a “Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival every four years as a means of increasing goodwill and good understanding of the British Empire”. Started in 1930 as British Empire Games held in Hamilton, has taken place every four years since then.
